What Equipment is Required to be on a Trailer?

Whether you're hauling cargo, towing vehicles, or transporting specialized goods, trailers are essential tools across industries and personal use. But beyond just having a trailer, it's crucial to ensure that it's properly equipped—not only to comply with safety regulations but also to guarantee efficient and secure transportation.

In this article, we’ll explore the essential equipment required to be on a trailer, helping you stay road-legal and road-ready.

1. Lighting and Reflectors

Proper lighting and reflectors are important for trailer visibility and road safety.

Required Lights Include:

● Tail lights (visible at night and during braking)

● Brake lights

● Turn signals

● Side marker lights (especially for longer trailers)

● License plate light

Reflectors:

● Red or amber reflectors are typically placed at the sides and rear to improve visibility in low-light conditions.

Tip: Always check if your lights are functioning before hitting the road. Lights not working properly can lead to fines and accidents.

2. Braking System

Depending on the size and weight of your trailer, a braking system may be legally required.

● Electric Brakes: Often used for medium to heavy-duty trailers. Requires a brake controller installed in the towing vehicle.

● Surge Brakes: Hydraulic system that activates when the towing vehicle slows down.

● Breakaway Kit: A safety device that automatically applies the trailer brakes if it detaches from the tow vehicle (mandatory in many regions for trailers over a certain weight).

3. Safety Chains or Cables

Safety chains are essential backup connections that keep the trailer attached to the towing vehicle in case the hitch fails.

Always cross the chains underneath the hitch, forming an “X” to catch the tongue if it drops. Make sure chains are rated for the trailer’s load.

4.  Hitch and Coupling Devices

A secure and appropriate hitch is a must. The coupling device must match the trailer’s weight rating and be properly maintained to avoid detachment.

● Ball Hitch or Fifth Wheel (depending on trailer type)

● Locking mechanism for secure attachment

● Safety pins or clips to prevent accidental uncoupling

5. Tires and Spare

Your trailer’s tires should be trailer-rated and well-maintained.

Required:

● Correct tire pressure

● Proper load capacity

● No dry rot, bulges, or excessive wear

It’s highly recommended to carry a spare tire and the necessary tools for replacement—especially on long hauls.

6. License Plate and Registration

Like any road vehicle, a trailer must have a visible and properly mounted license plate, along with up-to-date registration and insurance where required.

7. Load Securement Equipment

No matter what you’re hauling, cargo must be properly secured to prevent shifting or falling off.

Includes:

● Tie-down straps or chains

● D-rings and anchor points

● Wheel chocks (especially for vehicle haulers)

● Tarps or covers (for open trailers transporting loose items)

Proper load securement isn’t just safe—it’s legally required by DOT regulations in many regions.

8. Fenders and Mud Flaps

To prevent road debris from being thrown up and damaging other vehicles, trailers—especially dual-axle ones—must have fenders or mud flaps covering the wheels.

9. Jack and Stabilizers

Whether for emergency maintenance or loading/unloading, a trailer jack is essential. Larger trailers may also require stabilizers to prevent tipping or rocking.

Conclusion

Having the right equipment on your trailer is about more than just compliance—it’s about protecting your cargo, ensuring road safety, and giving yourself peace of mind.

Before your next trip, make sure your trailer is equipped with:

● Proper lighting and reflectors

● Functional brakes and breakaway kits (if required)

● Safety chains

● Matching hitch and coupler

● Good tires and a spare

● Secure cargo equipment

● Up-to-date registration

● Jacks and stabilizers
